City buses blanket Centro with frequent service along Av. Presidente Vargas, Av. Rio Branco, and the cross-streets around Skylux—so you’ll always find a line within a few minutes’ walk. It’s an easy hop to Lapa/Glória/Flamengo, fast links to Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema (via Metro connections or direct buses at peak times), and straightforward rides to Maracanã and the Rodoviária Novo Rio. Taxi
Taxis in Rio are plentiful, safe, and easy to spot (yellow with a blue stripe). You can hail on the street, use signed taxi ranks around Centro and tourist areas, or book via apps (e.g., 99 or Uber’s “Taxi” option) for fixed fares and receipts. Meters (taxímetro) should be on—Tarifa 1 by day, Tarifa 2 late night/Sundays/holidays—plus any road tolls. At SDUand GIG use the official taxi desks or the app pick-up zones. Cards are widely accepted, and tipping isn’t required (rounding up is common).
Uber
Uber in Rio is widely available across Centro and the beach zones, making it a convenient option day or night. Choose UberX, Comfort, or Black for price vs. comfort; fares can surge at rush hour or in heavy rain. The app shows estimated costs (tolls added automatically) and supports cards and digital wallets; cash may be available depending on your profile. At SDU and GIG, follow the app to the signed ride-hailing pickup zones. Uber & Itaú bikes (Bike Rio) are perfect for short Centro hops. Use the Uber or Itaú app to see nearby docks and unlock a bike/e-bike in seconds—there are clusters around Praça Mauá, Av. Rio Branco, and the Orla Conde. Flat lanes make it easy; return the bike to any dock shown in the app.
